Chapter 27 - Tate

That last hug with Harper almost broke my resolve. I was so close to putting my lips on her neck. So close to tasting her again.

I’m amazed I had enough blood left in my brain to remember that we’re just friends and that I couldn’t kiss her.

My dick might be mad at me right now, but I’m glad we didn’t cross that line.

We make awkward small talk as we eat. I know the food is delicious, anything Stefan makes is, but I don’t taste any of it.

I keep reliving the feeling of Harper in my arms. She was so warm and soft. She smelled like absolute fucking heaven.

Being here with her is torture, but it’s the best kind of torture. Having her near me feels amazing, and even if I can never have her, I’ll never want to give her up. She’s already a part of me. I wasn’t lying when I said that I would greedily take any piece of her she was willing to give me. I’ll be like a stray dog following her around, hoping for scraps. And I’ll do it with a big, goofy smile on my face.

“You’ll have to tell Stefan thank you from me! That was delicious!” Harper says as she diligently scrapes all the sauce off her plate.

I watch her tongue as it glides around the tines and back into her mouth.

Fuck, I watched her lick the fork.

“I will be sure to pass the message along. It will make him very happy to hear how much you enjoy his cooking. Would you like to play a game of cards with me after we clean up?”

“Ok! I know three card games, Go Fish, War and Crazy Eights. I can almost guarantee that you’ll win,” Harper laughs as she sashays into the kitchen with her dirty dishes.

“Let’s play War to start us out, and then we can play Go Fish and I’ll mop the floor with you!” I tease her.

“You cheated!” Harper yells at me.

“How exactly does one cheat at Go Fish?” I ask, laughing under my breath.

“You said you didn’t have any fours when I asked! I think you deliberately kept it for yourself!”

“I didn’t have a four when you asked! Besides, why would I deliberately keep it? I had no idea I was going to need a four to win.”

“Oh, I think you did! You sir, are a dirty cheat!”

“Careful, some might construe that as treason,” I tell her. I actually have no idea if that would even count as treason or if I could convict someone for treason like that these days.

“Pfffft,” Harper blows out a puff of air. “You’re just trying to throw me in the dungeons to cover up your crimes of cheating at a children’s card game. But I’m on to you now, buster!” Harper wags her finger at me.

“Oh no, you caught me.” I reply deadpan. “See, I wasn’t really sure if this whole being a prince thing was going to work out, so I thought I would test out a life of crime.
